Lybrel is not your ordinary birth-control pill. This pill (developed by Wyeth Pharmaceuticals) in not only a contraceptive, is was also designed to eliminate a woman?s monthly period.
The FDA has given its stamp of approval on May 22, 2007. It is expected to be available in United States pharmacies starting July, 2007.
Lybrel is an oral contraceptive that is to be taken 365 days a year. According to Wyeth:
?Lybrel provides a steady low dose of hormones so that over time women may become cycle-free. Women considering Lybrel should know that most subjects in the clinical studies experienced some breakthrough bleeding and spotting, especially during the first three to six months. In studies and analyses, Lybrel did not delay a return to fertility nor did it affect return to menses.?
The idea of not having a period at all (while still remaining healthy) seems like it would be a sure hit, but time will tell if this pill is accepted by the mainstream woman. My guess is that it will get a lot of attention in the short run by many (probably younger) women who don?t mind trying it. If no issues arise over the first year, many more will likely follow.
