Do you have any thoughts on the Birth Control Pill that stops periods completely?
"WASHINGTON -- The first birth-control pill meant to put a stop to women's monthly periods indefinitely has won federal approval, the manufacturer said Tuesday. Called Lybrel, it's the first such pill to receive Food and Drug Administration approval for continuous use. When taken daily, the pill can halt women's menstrual periods indefinitely and prevent pregnancies. It's the latest approved oral contraceptive to depart from the 21-days-on, seven-days-off regimen that had been standard since birth-control pill sales began in the 1960s. The Wyeth pill is the first designed to put off periods altogether when taken without a break. Click here to find out more! Some women raise concerns about whether blocking periods is safe or natural. But most doctors say there's no medical reason women need monthly bleeding. It can also trigger health problems from anemia to epilepsy in many women." Any thoughts? I don't think that's safe! Where will all of that endometrial lining end up? Eww...

- It is very safe. Since you don't ovulate there is no lining to worry about. Studies at the UW Madison WI proved that it is safe to eliminate your periods by taking birth control back to back. This was in our local newspaper several years ago when the UW did the studies.
- Its not "really" new, its a gimmick and has potential problems. Simply by skipping the last week in her pack of pills a woman can get the same effect as the new period skipping pills. Its all a marketing gimmick! I am skeptical about being the first to try any new pharmaceutical product. The potential problems are breakthrough bleeding at irregular intervals ( almost guaranteed to happen) and difficult dating a pregnancy if that should occur while on the pill. it is a good idea for the select few women with sever menstrual problems that are trying not to get pregnant. Depo provera has been used for this in the past but there is weight gain associated with depo and not the pill.
- Don't agree with stopping periods. It's a natural thing for a woman to have a period. If we start mucking about with it, who knows what implications can occur, like infertility.
- i disagree with it being totally safe. There are many drugs that are approved that are later removed from the market because they are harmful. I don't think toying with mother nature or with one's menstrual cycle is a good idea. Long term affects of stopping the cycle are not known. I have PCOS and don't ovulate but because I don't menstruate...the lining of the uterus DOES thicken...making me more vulnerable to uterine cancer. I think it will raise the number of women trying to conceive with fertility drugs and the number of multiples that are born.
