Why are women so weird about menstrual suppression?

I honestly don't undertstand this. I mean, when Seasonale came out and now that Lybrel is out, you'd think everyone would be celebrating. A period, aside from childbirth, is the WORST part about being female. Its an entire week every month of bleeding, cramps, bloating, fatigue, pms, and all that other lovely stuff and now that there is a way to end that, no one wants to try it! I mean, sure I was skeptical at first about the health risks, but I asked my gynecologist about it and she explained that when you're on birth control, you're not even having a real period! It's just bleeding as a side effect from hormone withdrawl and there is absolutley NO reason to have it every month. You can safely try it with ANY birth control (as women have been doing since the pill fist came out, and there's no reported problems) and still get a period as soon as you get off it. Yeah, periods are a natural fact of life, but they're absolutley horrible and since there's a safe way to stop them, why not? lynn, you could go to a planned parenthood or the local health clinic and get it free. my friend debbie does that WHO CARES if you're messing with mother nature? she's been messing with ME for the past six years! just cause it's "natural" doesn't mean you should have to deal with it! i've been on seasonale for two years, and yeah i've had spotting. but after your body get used to it, you have no more spotting and you're happily period-free! it's worth it

  1. i guess people are worried about the "safe" part.
  2. I guess to each their own, you know. My period is hardly an issue. It comes for 3 days and is super light.
  3. I WISH I could use the Seaonale (or something similar), but my insurance doesn't cover it and honestly, I just can't afford to pay full price for it.
  4. Personally I don't like to mess with mother nature, and don't take the regular pill even. Go ahead and be the Guinea pig, each to her own!
  5. some people think that you are messing up nature when you take birth control to avoid everything. personally, i think it would be great to have "that time of the month" just every three or four months...
  6. Good question! I was put on the pill when I was 14 due to severe menstrual cramps. I hated the idea, but at the time, I didn't think there was much of an alternative. As it turns out, I was right to be cautious. Because I went on the pill, several problems were covered up which wouldn't have been discoverd until later - presumably until I decided i wanted a family. As it happens I decided the pill wasn't for me and came off it. After much pestering from me, I got my tests and they found cysts and endometriosis. The other point I didn't like was that it was messing up my cycle. Menstrual cycles are so complicated and delicate that I wonder whether it's a good idea to start playing around with them. I know the medical people say it's ok, but only now are we getting to the point where we have 3rd generation contraceptive pill users and part of me wonders whether it has something to do with the rise in infertility, especially in males. . . I've rambled a bit, but these are my worries when it comes to menstrual suppression
  7. Have you ever heard the saying "there is no such thing as a free lunch"? All medications have side affects. Different people are more or less willing to put up with them. While O.C.'s are relatively safe, that is not the case for all women. That is why they are prescription drugs. For some women O.C.'s can be dangerous. So please don't profess to know all the dangers and potential side affects of any O.C. let alone a particular brand. It was also long thought that HRT was the fountain of youth. Instead it turns out it substantially increases your risk for heart attack, breast cancer and uterine cancer.
  8. i was on seasonique and bled non-stop for three weeks while on it. after looking further into the matter, i discovered that users can have up to 21 days of breakthrough bleeding each month. i'd rather deal with 5 days/month of bleeding over what i endured any day!
  9. From my own personal experience, I hated it when my period was late and I thought I was pregnant. Birth control is 99% effective, but it's not 100% effective. Many people have gotten pregnant on the pill. If you skip periods while on the pill, some people (like me for example) might get paranoid. Others would rather have their cycle regular from the get go. Mine was regular and still is. I'm on Yasmin, and so far it's worked for me. The reason I'm on it is because I want a monthly period to tell me that everything is working normally. I love having things scheduled and in order, so I guess you could say I don't mind my period that much anymore now that my bad cramps are out of the way.
