birth control methods?

I am young and healthy, although I am still afraid to try some birth control methods. There are limited methods I can use while breastfeeding my 3-month old son, and I am just wondering what kinds of methods work well, if any, with limited side effects??

  1. Condoms or abstinence. Those are the only things I can think of without any hormones or spermicides in them.
  2. My son is also 3 months, I had an IUD inserted after 5 weeks of giving birth. No side effects, no hormones. Ask your doctor. It's called "Copper T" 99.9% effective. It's good for 10 years, whenever you want to conceive again, simply have it removed by your doctor. Good Luck
  3. Here's several behavioral methods: http://www.plannedparenthood.org/birth-control-pregnancy/birth-control/behavioral-methods.htm
  4. Abstinance! i guess condoms too
  5. For you I could recommend holding an aspirin between your knees, avoid dropping it.
  6. I am an OB/GYN. There are many forms of birth control, which are safe and effective. Since you have been breastfeeding your son for three months, you can really choose any form of birth control. Estrogen containing birth control can decrease your breast milk, however this rarely occurs when your milk supply is well established. The next question you should ask yourself is how long will it be until you want to have another child. If you want long term birth control than I would suggest an IUD (Intrauterine device), my favorite is Merina. It secretes progesterone inside your uterus and is 99.9% effective for up to five years. It has the benifit of making your periods lighter or even stopping them in 40% of women. Of course you can take it out at any point when you want to have another child. If you are looking for less than a year than I would go with either oral contraceptive pills or the Nuva Ring, which is like birth control pills but is a plastic ring placed in the vagina. It is placed in a taken out once a month. Most OB/GYNs females I know use one of these two methods, if that helps your decision. I am not a fan of depo-provera.
