What's up with stupid birth control methods?!?

I keep seeiing these questions where people say they used all these stupid birth control methods and somehow got pregnant and I just don't get. Why would you put pizza sauce in your vagina instead of using a condom. It makes no sense! What are your thoughts? Also could someone explain to me how people heard about these ridiculous methods of birthcontrol and actually believed they would work?

5. sex ed is now teaching abstinence only so these kids are making up their own form because they don't know they right way because their parents aren't teaching them. Parents need to realize, their children are going to have sex whether you tell them to or not.
6. Sex ed doesn't only teach abstanance. That is a complete misnomer (at least in Vermont). It teaches that abstanace is the only 100% certain way of preventing pregnancy and STD infection, but if students are paying attention they will learn about all FDA approved birth control methods and all manner of nasty STD. They will also learn that there is no safe period as a healthy teenage woman doesn't ovulate with the regularity of a woman over 20 as well as all manner of other facts about human reproduction. This doesn't generally occur until 10th grade though and about 7% of students have had sex with more than 4 partner before 8th grade.
