- Mirena is a great birth control. I have had it for almost a year now without any problems. I have a history of weight gain on other birth controls, but I have not had any problems with that this time. In fact, I am losing weight. According to a scientific study on the Mirena website, there is no long-term affect on weight gain. I guess it is possible to get pregnant on it, but this is the most effective form of birth control outside of abstinence (and what fun is that). It is 99.9% effective, while surgery is 99.5-99.85% effective. I have a cousin that was conceived after my uncle's vasectomy. That is a chance you always take with sex. Just check out the Mirena website. They have a FAQ section that is very informative. If you have any other questions, feel free to email me.
- I have this IUC and I haven't gained any weight from it nor have I had any visible/known side affects. I have had it for about 5 months now. The only thing I did have was heavy bleeding the first month when it was put in. AItogether I bled for almost 2 months, but now when I have my regular period it is very very light and lasts about a day or two. I feel, after my own research & speaking with my doctor, this birth control is safer than the others, since it does not contain estrogen. Estrogen can cause & has been known to cause alot of side effects, from mild to severe! That is one of my reasons I wanted the Mirena. I have been on about 5 or 6 different bc pills in the past and had things from aching leg muscles, sharp chest pains, jittery, upset stomach, my cramps worsened, headaches, and so on. With the Mirena, just the couple months bleeding! Which, considering what I had before, I didn't even mind it!! Just remember, there are side effects with all medications! Also, every possible side effect has to be stated or the company could be sued. When something has a long list of side effects, it does seem scary but they have to put them on there even if only a few had the effect in their studies before placing any medication out on the market! Here is something you can do, make a list of a few catagories, one, the mirena iuc, the pill, the shot, etc and then under each, first do your research and list all the possible side effects of each and the good points they have too and then compare the lists! See which one you would be more comfortable with after seeing the benefits & cons of each form of birth control. Also, I have been having unprotected sex with my husband and we have no gotten pregnant on the Mirena. He doesn't pull out either. I know, TMI but I am trying to be as honest & helpful as I can. If you are concerned with weight gain, eat as you normally would, work out as you did before, don't change any of your habits and just weigh yourself a few times a month and see if there is a dramatic increase in your weight. I'm not saying this is true for everyone or every birth control pill, but when I was on the pill I put on 40some pounds!! Hope this helps you out some!! If not, repost or edit your question and I would glad to help you out more & do some research for you! Please remember to always consult your doctor with any concerns! They would be the BEST ones to help!

- Mirena is a big improvement on the older copper coils. In general it has much less in the way of side effects. Bleeding, after some initial trickeling tends to br reduced and so do other mestral problems. Weight gain is rare with Mirena as only a few microgrames of progesterone are released each day. Pregnancies have been recorded, nothing is perfect, The rate of ectopic pregnancy in users of Mirena is 0.06 per 100 woman-years. This rate is lower than the rate of 0.3-0.5 per 100 woman-years estimated for women not using any contraception. The corresponding figure for the copper IUD is 0.12 per 100 woman years. Studies on contraceptive efficacy have suggested a pregnancy rate (Pearl Index) of less than 1 per 100 woman-years. This coil seems to be suiting you, so why read the horror stories?
