- well, IUD birth control can cause toxic shock syndrome, but it is also practically foolproof and reversible, long term, cost effective birth control.
- The great things about it are that it lasts for 5 years so you don't have to worry about anything for that period of time. It also doesn't have any hormones in it so you won't have the weight gain or other side effects of other birth control options. The bad is if you change your mind in the 5 years you have to go have it taken back out.
- HORRIBLE cramps and extended period, I actually pulled the thing out myself because I could not take it anymore.
- IUDs are an effective means of birth control. Lisa Sussman at iVillage.com shares some excellent and clear information on this form of contraception: http://health.ivillage.com/gyno/gynobc/0,,j6ng,00.html Also ....Types of IUDs http://health.ivillage.com/gyno/gynobc/0,,679f,00.html Good luck!
- I've never had one, but I have been doing some research. The one that lasts 1 year (the Mirena) has hormones, and the one that doesn't (which is the copper) lasts 5-10 years. I have been doing research and talking to my doctor about the IUD, since I'm considering getting it when I'm done having babies. My doctor says the copper one is the one that causes the cramps and bleeding and that he doesn't recommend it. The Mirena (hormonal) actually can stop you from ovulating and having a period all together. Problems I've heard are still getting pregnant and having a miscarriage or a really bad pregnancy. Also I've heard the strings are stiff at first and sometimes poke your partner during intercourse. There's always the posibility of it falling out or falling into your uterus. Personally I'm considering getting it despite all of the bad stuff you hear, at least to try it out. So that I can wait like 5 years before deciding to get permanently fixed, to make sure I'm done having kids.
