Do you gain weight with an IUD like hormnal birth control?
I am on the birth control patch right now and I was thinking of getting an IUD instead. I gained weight with the patch and I was wondering if you gain weight while using the IUD?

- Not unless it's a hormonal IUD like Minera. And really, the patch shouldn't make you gain that much weight. Since it makes your body think it's pregnant, you can gain a few pounds in water weight. Or your appetite increases and you have to watch your cravings. Depo is a whole new ballgame...some women will gain up to 50 lbs!
- I have the copper IUD, I have had it since August. It is non- hormonal so it does not make you gain weight. I have not gained any weight since having it inserted. It is really great not having to worry about taking a pill or changing a patch.
- With Mirena it is possible, but less than with the pill (mirena is the 5-year IUD) With Paragard, the copper IUD, you do not gain weight.
- Studies have shown no increase in weight due to IUD whether it be Mirena or Para guard. There are other factors you need to consider b4 getting an IUD You must be in a monogamous relationship an infection is harder to treat with an IUD in place and women with multiple partners have an increase chance of infections. Yous hould have atleats had 1 child previous simply bc your uterus is larger and you would have a less chance of preforation but they do insert them if youhavnet had children. If you have had an ectopic pregnancy they will not insert it bc the IUD does n ot prevent ectopic pregnancies. Deoending on how your period is would depend onw hich IUD u might want to go with if you have painful and heavy periods (like I did) Mirena might be best for you since Paraguard is known for increase blood flow and cramps. Paraguard is good for 10 yrs and mirena is good for 5 years. Para Guard doesnt have hormones and Mirena has a very low dose that it dosent get in your blood stream. I personally Cannot have additional hormones in my body so Mirena has wrk wonderfully. The only downside Ive had from Mirena is acne and not period at all (which isnt a downfall really LOL)\ Best of luck
