Is any women on the ortho evra birth control patch?

I've got a friend whose been using the patch for over 2 years and she always takes it as directed and never misses changing it. She had an appointment in a few weeks to have her tubes tied. She's been feeling sick and when she took her last patch off for her period she didn't start. She went to the doctor and they told her she was six weeks pregnant. Has anyone ever gotten pregnant while properly taking this birth control method? After taking it for over 2 years what could've happened to cause it to fail and her end up pregnant. She has 3 kids and she's cried because she didn't want anymore.

  1. It aint 100% effective. There is a small failure rate.
  2. I have. I have a 2 1/2 year old daughter that was conceived while I was on the patch. The patch along with my fiance's high sperm count as well as my high fertility rate are what caused me to get pregnant. It's not the only birth control I've gotten pregnant on. There was also the Nuva ring (2nd child was conceived on it) and my first child was conceived while using condoms. I miscarried that child though. If she doesn't want to get her tubes tied after this baby, the Mirena is GREAT birth control. It's an IUD. It's the most effective form of birth control other than getting your tubes tied.
  3. my gyno told me flat out the other day that the patch wasn't the best form of birth control, because it often times won't stay stuck to your body, which means the hormones aren't getting in your system, which means you can get pregnant. i also had two cousins who took depo provera shots after having their kids, and ended up getting pregnant while taking the shots EXACTLY as prescribed. honestly, the only 100% surefire way NOT to get pregnant is abstinence. everything else has a SLIGHT, if not MAJOR chance of producing a pregnancy. i've also been told that most of the time, when women are on birth control, and get pregnant, it's because they didn't follow the directions exactly as planned!
  4. the patch is about the worst kind of hormonal birth control out on the market. i have never met anyone who could stand to stay on it for more than a few months. i was on it for a couple months and it caused horrible cramping and i bled for almost the entire time i was trying to use it. i went to the doctor and he told me that there was absolutely nothing wrong with me, it was just that the patch was not the best choice for most women. and i had trouble with it staying completely stuck...it tended to lift around the edges after a day or two, which compromised the dosage of hormones i was receiving. that alone could cause a screwed up cycle or allow conception to take place.
  5. I took the patch for a year before we started trying to conceive my daughter. I didn't get pregnant while taking it but I didn't like it at all. It ate horrible holes in my skin that took about a month to heal. I would end up with 3-4 patch sized sores all over my body at at time. My periods increased in length from about 3-4 days when I was on the pill to 9 VERY heavy days. My breasts hurt more when I was on the patch then they ever did while pregnant or breastfeeding. They never hurt when on the pill. When I first started taking them the package inserts said that it had the same medicine as the pill and similar side effects. About 18 months after I stopped taking the patch the company that makes them sent me an email that said the the patch puts you at a higher risk for having a stroke than the pill. I'm sorry your friend got pregnant when she wasn't expecting it. It sounds like she was very upset about it.
