I got pregnant the first time so fast after getting off the birth control shot; why can't I get pregnant now?
I stopped using the birth control shot Depo Provera in December of 2003. By March of 2004 I was pregnant. My son is now almost two and a half and we want to have another one. I've read that Depo Provera can lower one's estrogen level and make conceiving difficult, but if that were my case how did I get pregnant the first time? The only birth control I've used since is condoms that were lubricated with spermicide.

- How long have you been actively "trying" to get pregnant? Every pregnancy is different, so getting pregnant quick the first time doesn't mean it's going to happen every time. Has it been under a year? The average time it takes for most couples to conceive is up to a year. If you've been trying less than that you're still within the norm. If it's been over a year, you may want to go in and have some tests done. Perhaps your hormones are off, or your thyroid isn't working properly (this happens sometimes after pregnancy), or perhaps you've just been missing the mark. I would say if it's been under a year keep trying. If you get to the year mark, go in and have some tests done. Good luck.
- it's common for women who conceived quickly the first time to expect it to happen just as fast the second time and get worried too soon about fertility. Don't blame the shot.
- Same here. Got preg immediately after stopping BCPs and now I'm on my 5th cycle. But this is apparently "normal" and we were just lucky I suppose. I've heard that you can be very fertile as soon as you stop BCPs but if you don't catch the egg at that time then you are the same as everyone else. The very fact that it took us no time first time means we think we are possibly infertile, but I'm not worrying just yet.
