How long does breakthrough bleeding last on the new Birth Control Pill, Lybrel??

I was put on BCP because my period would not become regular. I would bleed all the time. My OBGYN said I should either get on BCP for 3 monthes or have a D and C. I don't think the D and C would have worked because I would occasionally stop bleeding. So, my doctor gave me these new pills called Lybrel. When I first got on them, I pretty much stopped bleeding. I have been on them for going on 3 weeks. I started bleeding again, although it is pretty light and seems to be old blood. It freaked me out at first, but then I looked up info on the pills and everything said that most women experience breakthrough bleeding, especially in the beginning. My question is, has anyone else tried these new BCPs? Did you have breakthrough bleeding? How long did it last? -Thank you!

  1. I was put on BCP nearly three months ago for nearly non-stop bleeding. Admittedly, I'm on a different pill. But it took me two months to get the breakthrough bleeding to stop. We're talking 2-3 weeks straight of breakthrough bleeding, followed by a break of a week, then 2-3 weeks again. But I stuck with it and my body finally adjusted and calmed down. I'm coming to the end of cycle three now and haven't bled in almost 21 days - heaven! In the midst of this, I had a telephone call with my doctor who reassured me that this was OK and I should stick it out for three months before we tried something else. Our first choice for "something else" was going to be a different pill. Then we would try minor surgery (endometrial ablation in my case instead of a D&C, but I'm done with kids.) You may want to have a similar conversation with your doctor if it starts to worry/annoy you.
