birth control--side effects?
I am 16. I am NOT sexually active just to clear that up from sqaure one. I am going to start birth control soon just to regulate my periods because they are very very irregular. Anyway I have been working on losing weight and so far I have lost like 20 pounds. My doctor told me that I would probably gain 2-3 pounds when I start the pill. I was wondering if being on the pill also makes it harder to lose weight or if I would still be able to lose weight while I am on it. Any help would be welcomed. Thanks

- any birth control you take will have side effects because of the hormones in the meds....for some people are affected differently you may gain 20 lbs from the piull where as your best friend may only gain 2 lbs. everyone's body reacts differently to different meds, but just keep working out and eating healthy and you should be okay....
- I didn't gain anything while on the pill. And I was able to lose weight normally. So don't worry. It was very nice having regular periods.
- birth control can do anything from putting on weight to mood swings. The list of side effects goes on and on, it is really hard to narrow down what side effects you will get. Each and every different pill will have different side effects and it's different for every female. At 16 your body is only just getting used to the new hormones in your blood and the new changes. It will regular out but unfortunately this may take a few years. Your best speaking to your doctor abour the weight control as he maybe able to put you on different ones, otherwise try to eat healthy which means no fatty products and limit your calourie intake along with 30 minutes of exercise each day and you should be fine
- I asked my doctor about this and he told me that the only reason some women gain weight while on birth control is because the hormones in birth control cause you to be more hungry...that is all...its not what is in them really, they just make you more hungry, so as long as you are aware of this you can control yourself and not gain weight.
- I was in the same position when I was your age. I went on the pill when I was 16. It's sometimes hard to remember to take it. I didn't gain any weight I actually lost 10-15kgs. The pill doesn't make you gain weight. The only way you can gain weight is by increased calories. The pill does make some people eat more. If you aren't sexually active but do have a boyfriend and do other stuff, then I've found that the pill makes it difficult to 'get in the mood'. The pill is great overall though. You can choose when to have your period and it can clear up your skin etc. There are other benefits like a lower risk in breast cancer! Good luck!
