For those of you who have been on the Depo Provera birth control shot?
I have been on the Depo since my son was born in May of 2006. I am scheduled to get another shot this friday, but I think I am simply going to request a low hormone birth control pill instead because of all the sideffects including some weight gain and headaches. I was wondering how the Depo affected you and how long after going off the shot were you able to concieve. Thank you.

- Get off it! I was on it off and on from 2001-2004 and I got terrible migraine headaches and gained about 16 unlosable lbs. PLUS I went off the depo in May of 2004 and tried getting pregnant until FINALLY I got pregnant in Jan of 06. I will never go on any birth control again. It's just not good. I am pregnant with my second and after this hubby will wrap it before he taps it if he doesn't want anymore than 2.
- I was on Depo for 4 years. I loved it. No side effects other than the loss of periods. I found out though that it reduces bone density and wasn't incuded in the list of side effects until almost 4 years on it. I switched to the patch and was on it for 2 years before trying to conceive. It took 7 months.
- well when i was taking the depo shot, i thought it would be good because it's every 3 months and the thought of not getting my period was pretty good. but that's not what i got. i bled for 9 months straight. all day everyday. after i finally switched doctors and got my cycle regulated, it took about a year before i got pregnant with my daughter.
- I was on the depo shot for 3 1/2 years and the only side effect i had while on the shot was i never did have a period. Once i stopped taking the shot, my period came back a month later and i was pregnant 11 months later. I loved the birth control shot, it worked really good. Read the following website: http://www.indiana.edu/~health/hw/depoprovera.shtml It should help answer your questions. Good luck!
- I too suffered the weight gain (60 lbs, normal weight 110 lbs) and head aches, as well as low sex drive (my husband was SO pissed!!!) I got off because my son had turned 8 and we wanted another baby. I talked to my Gyno, and was advised to get off asap because the depo stays in your system for up to a year... Whatever, I got pregnant within 2 mos of getting of the shot. Every woman's body reacts differently. Good luck!
- OMG it was the WORST method of birth control I EVER used. Some women can't ever conceive again. I gained 50 pounds, had terrible skin, and was soooo moody. It was AWFUL. I got off of the shot in 2001 and we didn't conceive our son until 2003. Unfortunately, MANY women have had similar experiences.. go with the Nuva-Rring. That's what I use now.. It's very very easy. I don't have to remember to take a pill at the same time every day, and there aren't any side effects.
