Does the birth control patch ORTHO EVRA stop periods or lighten them? What are the side effects?

I'm on the Depo and am thinking of switching to the patch. What other Birth Control Methods would STOP periods or even LIGHTEN them because I originally got on the Depo because of SEVERE HEAVY periods.

  1. Ortho Evra shortens them. Everyone is different but I was on it for a while and I had some side effects. I gained some weight, had rashes from the patch area and had almost constant breast pain. I switched to the ring and so far it seems to be working out okay. I thought it would be difficult to insert but it's really not too bad. An added bonus is that you only have to worry about it once a month. It hasn't really made my periods as short as when I was on the patch but like I said, everyone is different. I'd talk to your Dr. about the pros and cons. Mine told me that taking birth control that stops your periods alltogether isn't always a good idea. Hope this helps.
  2. I tried the patch and found it very awkward to be honest! My periods were the same, the patch kept falling off and I always had an itchy rash where it'd been. It didn't suit me but it might work for you. I have heavy painful periods and I've tried various pills. Depo is the only one that stopped them completely. So stick with it if you not planning on conceiving in the near future.
  3. Ortho-Evra worked fine for me, until my body couldn't handle the amount of hormones it was allowing me to soak in from the patch. I had to stop using it due to dizziness and fainting. Make sure you are aware of the side effects before starting. And also, completely stopping your period is said to not be healthy if you ever want to conceive.
