Anyone use the IUD birth control Mirena?

I am considering getting the IUD Mirena inserted. My current form of birth control is the patch (for 2-3 years) and I love it but my fiance and I are not looking to have kids for the next several years and would prefer the convienience of not having to change the patch weekly. I was wondering if anyone on answers is currently on it or has been on it in the past. Likes/dislikes, cost (did insurance cover a portion of it), side effects. Anything would be helpful. Thanks I should also mention that I have tried the shot (hated it, made me gain soooo much weight), the ring (wouldn't stay in), the pill (forget to take it) so thats how I ened up with the patch. I am planning on having kids someday so I don't want anything surgical and I liked the idea of the IUD becuase while it is effective for 5 years, it can be taken out at anytime if we decide we are ready for kids.

  1. I actually asked my doctor because I had the same thoughts as you did. He told me it is only prescribed to women who already have children, because it could do damage to you and will make you unable to have children. He can cause scarring basically. He prescribed me the nuva ring which is really great, I put it in once a month, in the beginning of my fourth week, I pull it out, have my period and then one week later put my ring in for the next month. It's very safe and easy to use, you don't feel it and it doesn't come out if you push it far enough. My periods are much lighter and quicker. I use to have the week long period but now it lasts about two days and a half. I really love it, plus it's cleared my skin better then the oral contraceptives have.
  2. hiya, i used the mirena after my first born, but i had it put in 6 weeks after my c-section and i found it painful being inserted but i think it had more to do with the c-section, i ended up getting it removed 3 weeks later cause there are 2 strings that hang down (so that it can be pulled out easily) and i swore them things kept jaggin me!! so my experience was not great, other people may have had a good one, Have you thought about the contraceptive injection or the implant? 3. I have Mirena and love it. It is hard to find a Dr that will insert it if you have not already had a child. I have had children so it wasn't an issue for me. I don't have insurance so I paid for the whole thing out of pocket. I no longer have heavy painful periods or PMS.
  4. Hi, I have not had children and it was not hard for me to find a doctor who would insert it. In fact, 2 doctors recommended it to me before I even got it. Cost will vary according to the doctor. Planned Parenthood will do it for about $300 - $400. My insurance paid for it so I went to my regular Gyn who charges $750 for it. I have to be honest, insertion was incredibly painful. I actually had to go back to the doctor the same day because I was in so much pain and they had to give me stronger pain medicine. Since then I have had severe cramping every month for a day or two. The doctor thinks I'm developing an ovarian cyst. But this only occurs in 12% of women and usually goes away. And prescription pain medication has taken care of the pain from cramping. Other than that everything is pretty good. I only bleed for like 1 day a month and it is more spotting than anything. I broke out with acne on my chest and back the first month but that has gone away too. I wouldn't be too discouraged by all the "horror-stories" out there. Every woman's body is different. I may have had a horrible insertion but your's may go smoothly. If you do go for it make sure your doctor prescribes you pain medication to take before insertion. There are also quite a few procedures they can do beforehand to numb, soften and open your cervix. Good luck! Hope this helped!
