- Usually clinics do not offer Intrauterine Devices (IUDS), because they usually require a doctor, and not just a nurse or nurse practitioner. If you have never been pregnant before an IUD can be painful to have inserted. Basically your vagina is not used to having something in there 100% of the time. So it can be painful to get used to . In addition you need to think about what you want there is: 1) Paragard - It is made from copper, and it protects against pregnancy for up to 10 years. There are no hormones involved. 2) Mirena - It protects against pregnancy for up to 5 years, but it uses hormones. I suggest trying Nuva Ring. It's once a month , so its not as hard to remember as the pill or as ortho evra.
- You will have to check with your clinic but the answer is probably no. I have been to a Planned Parenthood clinic before (it's not free but income based). Their nurse practicioners do insert IUDs (they are the ones who recommended it to me). At their clinic it is based on your income - the cheapest for the Mirena would be $300 to $400 and the cheapest for the Paragaurd is $500 to $600. I doubt that you can receive the IUD at any clinic for free. But again, you should call and double check.
