Why is getting a pelvic exam required when going on birth control?
Seriouly. When I was about to start college I went to planned parenthood and they let me get on some 1 year thing where i could get birth control w/o the exam(because i'm not sexually active). but where i went to college they didn't have a planned parenthood and they wouldn't give me my birth control w/o getting the exam...so i did. And omg it HURT!!!! I cried and when i got back to my dorm room i took a shower and lay curled in bed for the rest of the day. Its been over a year since i had that exam and now i have to get another one so i can start birth control again. The reason I want the birth control is because of my crazy heavy periods. I'm about to turn 20 and I'm not sexually active, nor have I ever been sexually active. I do NOT want to go through the pain of another exam but I really don't want to deal with my heavy(and long) periods. Grrr....I really want to try the Lybrel thing(the one thats supposed to make your periods go away).I really don't know what to do.

- I would suggest going to see a doc instead of to a clinic. Pelvic exams are required to check for ovarian cancer and abnormalities in your uterus, fallopian tubes and ovaries. If there are any, they won't prescribe the drugs.
- I'm on Yasmin and I use to have long and heavy periods. They're now 4 days and pretty light. So look into yasmin. You have to get a pap test starting at 18 whether sexually active or not. Sorry. It's just part of the deal. It's honestly better to just get one done though because it tests for abnormal cells which could be cancer and you want to catch that as soon as possible. I get pap tests every 6 months because there's history of cancer in my family and I know they suck and hurt but I'd rather be safe then sorry. Just take your mp3 player or a magazine and try not to think about what they're doing. It's honestly the fastest doctor visit you'll ever have so just relax!!
