How long after birth can I start taking birth control ?
I want to get on birth control asap after giving birth. How long do I actually have to wait to do this? I was originally planning doing the Mirena procedure, but not covered thru my insurance, so I will be going back on birth control pills. Please advise. ty

- I got mine at my six week checkup. You are supposed to wait that long to have sex anyway and your period may not start earlier than that either.
- Usually they'll put you on something as soon as you go for your 6 week check-up.
- You might want to wait until your 4-6 week check-up to go on birth control. Your doctor might even offer it. Are you going to breastfeed? If so, you might not be able to go on birth control.
- I believe technicly you can go on it right away but the standard is at your 6 week checkup. if you are breastfeeding this may limit which birth control pills you can go on. I believe you can also go on deprovera.
- Natural Family Planning is just as effective as birth control pills and completely safe if you are breast feeding. Also, you don't have to worry about other side effects of birth control pills like blood clots. Good luck!
- i think can start right away they gave me my depo shot in the hospital the day i had my son so i dont know why birth control pills would be any different unless they interfered with breast feeding. call your doc and ask
