What birth control is safe to use while breastfeeding?

I plan to go on birth-control immediately after I have my daughter (esp. since they say it's really easy to get pregnant within a year of having your first, so I wont take any chances). What birth control methods are safe? What pills? What about depo-provera, or the shot? Or the patch? I plan to discuss this with my OB at my next appointment but I just want some ideas now. Any suggestions/knowledge?

  1. Condoms! I would suggest that you ask about progesterone based birth control, it can be used safely but some doctors won't prescribe it.
  2. Any thing non-hormonal..such as the Mirena IUD
  3. Definitely condoms! I wouldn't recommend the patch whether you're breastfeeding or not- it's not safe. Good luck- your Dr. is absolutely the person to get the best advice from.
  4. I would recommend an IUD only because they are are a lot easier than trying to remember the pill, or having to go get the depo every so often. most IUD's can be in place up to 5 to 10 years and can be taken out at anytime. they are placed inside during your postpartum visit and then checked during your yearly visit.
  5. orthro micro nor is the only pill that i know of that you can take while breastfeeding or you can have a iud
  6. condoms most doctors don't recommend pills or patch's when breastfeeding. you can't have sex until the doctor clears you and that's about 6 or 8 wks. and ur not really going to have the energy after having a baby to have sex anyway.
  7. If you plan to breast feed your OB will probably put you on a low hormone birth control pill so it will have as little effect as possible on milk production. I forget the name of the one my doc had me on while I was nursing my son. She actually wanted me to use an IUD, but I didn't want to.
  8. THe second answerer who said the mirena IUD was wrong, its called the Paraguard IUD which is hormone free, I have one in place now for 2 yrs after my youngest was born I had it inserted. Its wonderful you don't have to worry about taking the pill, the shot, changing the patch or whatever, its just there working away, its reversible and lasts up to 10 years. The Mirena IUD lasts up to 5 yrs but has the hormones and yes I do know this, thats why I chose the Paraguard because I breastfed my daughter until she was 18 months, The Paraguard IUD will give you a heavier period! good luck and hope you choose the Paraguard IUD because it really does work great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  9. My friend is nursing and she has the Mirena IUD. So far she really likes it. I plan on having one after I have this little one the end of the summer.
