What type of birth control should I switch to?
I'm currently taking a mini-pill with just progesterone but my doctor said when my son reaches 6 months it becomes less effective and I should switch to a different method. Well he's six months old now. I plan on still nursing him and I've heard that the pill with both hormones can lower your milk supply. I've also heard that you can take something while taking the birth control pill to increase it. My main concern is the hormone getting into my son's system. I don't want to use an IUD (the whole foreign object inside of me and a fertilized egg dying doesn't sound good to me). I'd like to use something more effective than natural family planning or diaphragm /condoms. If I take a low hormone pill do you think that will be okay with still nursing my baby? How do you think the hormone would effect him?

- switch to...just pleasure youself
- Keep your legs closed...works wonders.
- try condoms
- I have taken everyone in the book! Ortotrycyclen works great! But I also love the Orto-Evra Patch...put a pactch on once a week and leave it on....even shower with it. it was great! They do have a patch that is clear...then you donot have to take a pill everyday...
- After having my 4th. I went on the " IUD " it only works in the are where the sperm travels. It doesn't effect your breast milk at all!!! I breast feed last child now 1 1/2 yrs old til she was 20 mths! Talk to your doc about it, he or she will give you the 411 on it. Also ask about your insurance, some of them don't pay for the IUD! I had the IUD now for almost 1 yr, works fine w/ me!
- If you want to still breastfeed the safest way to go is probably going to be the depo-prevara (the shot). It tends to add a few extra lbs I think 8lbs was the average but if you're active and watch your appetite since it increases your appetite; which is what makes you gain that weight. It would probably be worth trying once and since it lasts for 3 months if you're done breastfeeding by then you can switch to something with estrogen. Estrogen is generally not recommended if you are breastfeeding which is why you were on the mini pill I'm sure.
- Tracking fertility signs can be as effective as the Pill... just another, safe, natural option ;)
