What type of birth control is safe for a woman who smokes?
My aunt has been on the depo provara shot for 2 years now, but she is tired of getting the shots. What is another type of birth control that is safe for a smoker?

- Condoms.
- Drug companies no longer have to make drugs that are safe for smokers or drinkers, it cuts their development cost
- Natural Family web sites have suggestions for alternatives to contraception. I have friends that swear by these various methods and they have worked for them. Another b/c is contraceptive jelly, sponge or condoms. You can buy them over the counter and they do not contain hormones like b/c pills do.
- JUST QUIT SMOKING. no birth control meds. go with smoking, nothing goes with smoking!!!
- There aren't many options. However, the Today sponge is available over the internet. Canadian companies sell it. It's not illegal to have, it's just not approved for sale in the US. Otherwise, I suggest she quit smoking, use condoms, or get her tubes tied (if she doesn't want kids at all).
- If she has had a child she should talk to her doctor about an IUD. I have the Mirena and love it. (Although I'm not a smoker)
- As far as I know, no contraceptive is safe for smokers. You are at a higher risk for serious and deadly side affects when you smoke. Tell her to get her doctor to help her quit smoking.
