How long does it take for the birth control patch to start working?

I've been on the patch now for two weeks and one day. The first day of my period was on a Friday and I started using the patch on the following Sunday which was two weeks ago. I had sex with my husband tonight without using a condom. Should I be worried? Just in case some of you don't know, the patch has the same hormone as the birth control pill and the Nuva ring, but just more (by 60% I've heard). Anyway, so I'm sure it works the same as these other methods of birth control. Another question: Has anyone experienced any side effects from using the patch? If so, what are they and how long did they take to subside? I've been experiencing nausea and mild headaches and am wondering if these symptoms may be side effects from the patch. Thanks!
