What type of birth defects come from birth control?
My husband and I may want to have a baby soon, but I am wondering how long I should be off of birth control before it is safe to have a child. I know that birth control can cause babies to have many kinds of problems and we want our babies to be as healthy as they can be. If anyone could help, I would be so glad! Thank you so much!

- if your birth control is working right, None!
- I'm sorry, but you're misinformed. Birth control will not cause defects or problems with future children, there has never been a report of anything of the kind. Birth control as a contraceptive is perfectly safe for future pregnancies. Obviously don't take my word for it, check into it yourself. You can find plenty of valid information online about birth control, or you can do one better and talk to your ob-gyn ... who will give you the basic facts and discard this myth you picked up.
- My Dr told me to wait and have one normal cycle. Somtimes this can take a few months or happen the next month. It depends on your body, your cycles and how long you have been on BC. And the previous person is right, although it is questionable about whether or not the pill can cause miscarriages. The reason why you should wait for a normal cycle is just to let your body regulate itself!
- Birth control will not hurt a baby, even if you get pregnant and don't know it and are still taking it for a few weeks. You should talk with your doctor about this.
- The only time birth defects have occured w/ birth control is when a woman does not know they are pregnant & continues taking it for months, and still only a few birth defects have been repoted due to this. Most OBs ask you to wait for 1 normal cycle to pass after birth control, but this is only to increase your odds. Many woman actually get pregnant on the pill, like ortho is being proven less & less effective. So you should be safe to try as soon as you stop. Good Luck
- You should be fine to get pregnant right off of birth control. The defects happen if you get pregnant while ON bcp, or if you are on something like Depo that can take a long while to get out of your system. BCP leave your system as soon as you stop taking them, although it can take a few months to get back to normal. If you are still worried, call your doc and ask him/her. :)
