How long will it take the birth control shot to work?

Sometimes if you take it at the right time then it works immediately. Like I've heard it's the fifth day after a period or the fifth day of a period. I had my shot about 3-4 days after my period ended. So will it work immediately or will I have to wait? How long did they tell you to wait if you had your shot after your period ended?
