Do all birth control methods involving hormones kill sex drive?

They keep a woman from ovulating and studies show that is the strongest time when the woman is in "the mood". Is there birth control that doesn't stop ovulation. PS- I hate condoms. They smell and are uncomfortable and my husband doesn't like them either.

  1. Yes. Birth control pills, for instance, can either increase or descrease your sex drive. It's a matter of chance. But I think that most decrease your sex drive. Guess that's the price paid for peace of mind. But it's ironic, cuz if you have no sex drive, you won't have sex that much & then...well...there's birth control for ya...in its simplest form!
  2. Birth control bills are called birth control bills to prevent you from becoming pregnant, not to prevent you from becoming horny. You need to figure out your dosage of hormones in your birth control pill. The purpose of birth control pills would be to secrete a hormone that stops you from ovulating. You can get horny whenever you want.
  3. Well, if you've had a baby already, I'd recommend what I have -- the Mirena IUD. I LOVE it!!!!! It has a low dosage of just progesterone (no estrogen) that is delivered directly into the lining of your uterus. It may prevent ovulation in some women, but I've felt that ovulation pinch with it. Most of the time, the woman still ovulates but it's blocked by the IUD (the top part of the "T"). It also lessens the build-up of the lining of the uterus. So, guess what -- shorter less severe periods. As a matter of fact, mine are now 2 days of the tiniest amount -- I use panty-liners and barely need those for 2 days!!! Oh, and no more cramps AT ALL!!! It also thickens cervical mucus and blocks semen from entering the uterus. OK, so 1 small side effect that is a little annoying but still worth it -- the thickening of the cervical mucus. Sometimes there will be a little discharge that is thicker than normal. No biggie. Also, the first month or two was a little difficult to get through. I had to be patient. The first 6 weeks I spotted constantly. My doctor kept telling me to be patient and now (it's been 7 months) it's WONDERFUL and so worth the wait. To answer your question -- it doesn't effect my sex-drive whatsoever. As a matter of fact, I've been MORE active with it, as now my husband and I don't worry about getting pregnant. The Mirena IUD has the lowest failure rate of all birth control methods. Good luck!
  4. if you and your husband are sure that you do not want any more children you could get a tubal ligation or your husband could get a vasectomy. With a tubal ligation you still ovulate, but the egg can't get into the fallopian tubes because it is cut and cauterized. There are also female condoms, spermicides, cervical caps, the ovulation awareness method, and sponges, all of which contain no hormones. Also, while many birth control methods involve hormones, you will still have a se drive. If one kind hasn't worked for you, ask your doctor to try another kind, particularly low dose kinds. There are many options here: the pill, the mini-pill, the ring, the shot (aka depo), and the patch. For these methods to work as a birth control they need to stop the egg from reaching the fallopian tubes, but that doesn't mean that you won't be ion the mood or feel sexy. I found that I felt like having sex a lot more often after I started the pill because I wasn't worried about getting pregnant if the condom broke. A lot of the reason that I wasn't in the mood for sex when I wasn't on the ring (my prefrered method) was because I was worried, and that inerefered with my enjoyment of sex.
  5. I had to get off birth control, patches, and the ring. They made me so crazy. I really think that is why 2 of my relationships didn't work out, because they literally make me nuts. I had migraines all the time, and horrible mood swings. I had absolutely no sex drive either. I will be getting on the non hormonal IUD pretty soon, and I can not wait. Finally really effective bc without hormones.
  6. i went off birth control last year and noticed an immediate spike in my sex drive (much to the pleasure of my husband). i switched to a diaphragm with spermicide, and i am learning the fertility awareness method. the diaphragm, when used correctly, has about the same effectiveness as a condom. there are no hormones, you get fitted by your gynecologist, fill the prescription, and that's it. you should get refitted if you gain or lose more than 10 pounds. it works as a barrier method and the spermicide kills the sperm. it can be put in up to 8 hours before sex, and i think it's great.

  8. I don't know the medical or scientific answer - all I know is I was on Tricyclen or 8 years, and then Linessa for a year after that (from 16-25) and I have been off birth control for a month and a half and ALREADY notice a difference in both my sexual drive AND actual sexual sensations. I used to have problems with orgasm - but if the last few weeks are any indication, things are much MUCH better now :)
