Bill Gates is giving away £145m gift to Malaria research. What do you think - do you smell a rat?
Don't the pharmaceutical giants have big enough profits as it is? Isn't this money just going to line the pockets of the wealthy? Is this just a form of money laundering? Each year, there are approximately 515 million cases of malaria, killing between one and three million people. Not the greatest killer. To put this into perspective: The World Health Organisation (WHO) says every year 1.2 million people die in road accidents - making it, according to WHO's 2002 calculations, the seventh biggest killer in the world, ahead of diabetes and malaria. Below are just a few of the top 12 pharmaceutical giants with their revenue beside: Revenues ($ millions) 1 Johnson & Johnson - 53,324.0 2 Pfizer - 52,415.0 3 GlaxoSmithKline - 42,730.6 4 Novartis - 37,020.0 5 Sanofi-Aventis - 36,998.4 6 Roche Group - 34,702.8 7 AstraZeneca - 26,475.0 8 Merck - 22,636.0 9 Abbott Laboratories - 22,476.3 10 Wyeth - 20,350.7 11 Bristol-Myers Squibb - 17,914.0 12 Eli Lilly - 15,691.0 Although some are under development, no vaccine is currently available for malaria.

- There must be something in it for him, thats alot of money...then again he is a Billionnaire, so might be looking for excuses to let money go.....
- he is trying to buy himself out of hell
- What I think is that it just makes me weep to see that in this day and age, a person cannot do anything good without being suspected of an ulterior motive. Are you aware that malaria is one of the leading causes of death in the entire world? And entirely preventable? http://www.cdc.gov/malaria/impact/index.htm
- nah l think there genially being honest.
- Don't be an idiot. Bill gates has pledged to donate nearly his entire fortune before he dies. He gives billions a year to a wide variety of charities.
- I have just seen the tv programme about Bill Gates and I think he is genuinely trying to help the poorest people to conquer these dreadful diseases. I don't think that the pharmaceutical companies , some of whom are pouring millions or even billions into research and charitable giving, are relevant to Bill Gates' attitude. Good luck to Bill & Melinda. Others have made money and are tight with it.
- No. Why are you so suspicious?? Malaria kills more people than HIV and AIDS, and infects a very large number of people each year. So why shouldn't he give £145 million to research? It's peanuts to him after all. I don't see what the revenue of pharmaceutical companies has to do with it. They are crooks yes, but this is more about Bill Gates doing something with all that spare money he has propping up his mansion.
- heres something interesting for you. The Bill gates foundation gives almost half of its yearly billion dollar charitable donations to the world health organisation. Now while the worlds healths organisation mission statement is the "attainment by all peoples of the highest possible level of health" it also has "additional interests". In addition to the World Health Organisations "mission" international treaties assign the Organisation a variety of responsibilities. For instance, the Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs and the Convention on Psychotropic Substances call on the WHO to issue binding scientific and medical assessments of psychoactive drugs and to recommend how they should be regulated. In this way, the WHO acts as a check on the national drug policy-making Commission on Narcotic Drugs. The WHO also maintains a model list of essential medicines that all countries' health-care systems should make available and affordable to the general population. Funnily enough, the funding from major pharmaceutical companies along with the Bill Gates fund & the Rockfeller foundation now exceed that of all 193 member nations. While I'm sure a sizeable amount of this money goes towards making the world a better place, I'm more sure that a bigger proportion goes towards insuring that the major companies keep there foothold in world markets through the recommendation of "WHO".
