I'm a nursing mom seeking for a good birth control option. Doc recommended Mirena IUD, but I'm scared of it.

I am a nursing mom and am limited to certain birth control options. Mirena IUD looks promising, but I've seen so many negative comments and am scared of the side efffects. Help!

  1. Minera IUD is supposed to be ok from what I read... a hormone-free type is the Copper IUD in case it's the hormones worrying you. Good resource site with descriptions of all birth control methods: http://www.sexualityandu.ca
  2. I dont know what is safe or not when you are nursing and what's secreted into breastmilk.. You should just talk to your doctor. If you are afraid of the side effects of that kind, then you should see what else they have available. There are other kinds that you can take. Just find out what options you have.
  3. I had copper IUDs for over 30 years apart from having my two children. I had no problems at all.
  4. I have a mirena IUD and I love it. I nowq have shorter lighter periods with less cramps. as far as the nursing part. The hormones in the IUD are supposedly the same ones our bodies already have so i think it would be safe. And i haven't had any side effects from it. so talk to your doctor and make sure it's right for you. I had a copper one about 10 yr's ago and It was horrible for me. But I just love my mirena I've had it in almost 3 yr's now. Best of Luck to ya, Crystal S
