Irregular periods, birth control, and pregnancy?

My periods are so irregular that I only get them about once every 6 months. My doctor has ruled out PCOS and some other things. Today she gave me a prescription for birth control. Only thing is my boyfriend and I want to get pregnant. She says I will only be on them for about 3 months to see if it helps regulate me. My question is how long after that will it take for me to become pregnant? And is it harmful to the baby if I have been on birth control? I have never been on any birth control so I really could use any advice about it. I didnt realize I had so many questions until after I left the office and I really dont want to schedule another appointment just for questions. So please help me.

  1. Your best bet is to book another appointment and to take a list of questions with you, but I'll answer the ones above the best I can and hope that helps. First of all, birth control pills will not have any negative effects on your baby. Millions of women take the pill and go onto have perfectly normal pregnancies. In terms of how long after stopping the pill is it possible to get pregnant, unfortunately there is no one answer because it varies from person to person. Some women find they stop taking the pill and get pregnant the very next month, where as for some women it can take up to a year but you can increase your chances by having a healthy diet, not being stressed, taking folic acid supplements etc. Although a year does seem a long time, it isn't too bad considering that if you dont go on birth control pills then your periods will continue to be very irregular (every 6 months as you say) meaning you will only be ovulating twice a year anyway. Therefore in the long run it does seem the best solution to go on the pill and hopefully it will regulate your periods, although you dont ovulate when taking birth control and many women find that although their periods get into a regular pattern whilst taking the pill, they often return to their old irregular cycle when they stop taking it but you would need to discuss this with your doctor. Good Luck, hope all works out for you x
  2. As far as I know, if you are taking birth control while you are pregnant, yes it can hurt the baby so make sure you don't do that. Once you start taking birth control, it normally takes about a month for it to really be working so be careful cause in that first while you could still get pregnant. Once you stop taking birth control, it varies from woman to woman how long it takes for it to leave their system. My mom said she went off birth control in October and got pregnant in December. I have heard that if you stay on birth control for an extended period of time without giving your body a break, it can make getting pregnant very difficult... kind of reminds me of fake nails... if you have them on all the time, you real nails will turn yellow and not be healthy...gotta give them a break.... hahaha sorry for the bad metaphor :) If you are really uncomfortable with taking it though, simply don't!
