Does keeping birth control pills in the refrigerator really preserve their effectiveness?

I was reading an article about how you shouldn't store any kind of birth control in extreme heat, which I already knew. But it also said that if you take a birth control pill like seasonle or lybrel where you buy a three or more months supply of pills each time, you should store them in the frig to keep them effective. Has anyone ever heard this from a reliable source?

  1. Hmmm, interesting question. I honestly can't give you a straight answer, since I have no idea. HOWEVER, I was on seasonale for a few years and was never told any of that by my doctor or the pharmacist.
