Does anyone know whether birth control pills are the best way to shrink cysts in the ovaries?

My sister is 33 years old and has never taken birth control. She has an ovarian cyst larger than normal. Her doctor advised her to take birth control pills to help shrink the cyst.

  1. I am in this exact same situation. It's why I started the pill. I've been on it for about 2 months, and so far it has helped with the pain and cramping so it seems to be working. It was either BC or surgery! Next time I go for a check up I'll have the cyst measured again, but based on how I feel I think it will eventually fix the problem. :-)
  2. It's very common for BCP to be prescribed to shrink ovarian cysts, depending on the size of them. Often, as long as they are smaller, "Simple" cysts... BCP is the easies way to go. The options for cysts are usually as follows... Low dose birth control pill Mirena IUCD (Has progesterone in it, and shrinks the cysts) Laparoscopic cystectomy And yes, the large majority of the time, it shrinks or clears up the cyst completely in a small period of time.
